Analysis & Outlook

After what looked like a strong start, the Giants fell apart and failed to impress. Their offense was decent but their defense was middle of the pack despite all the talent on board. After only one season, DC Bill Sheridan was fired and the team signed Perry Fewell from the Buffalo Bills to help right the ship.

They immediately made some changes on defense by letting go of veterans DT Fred Robbins and CB Kevin Dockery but they also signed Ss Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant to fill a middle secondary that was exposed too often, especially when Kenny Phillips was injured. The Giants will look to add some depth at CB, LB and DT to get that defense back in the top 10.

On offense, the Giants did well with a passing game that saw many players contribute, but their running game took a significant step back. The Giants had bad luck with the Andre Ware injury, but adding a RB who can play like Derrick Ward a couple of years back will help them greatly.

In the first round, I see the Giants targeting a LB and Sean Weatherspoon seems to be a good fit for the system. Don’t be surprised if the Giants decide to go with RB Toby Gerhart in round two. His power-running style is similar to Brandon Jacobs’ and he’s a decent receiver out of the backfield. Look for the Giants to build depth at CB, DT and the O-Line on day three.

The Giants are definitely a team to reckon with. Similar to the Pittsburgh Steelers, their disappointing season has given them an easier schedule while they’re still a good team. I expect them to be a contender again in 2010.
