Analysis & Outlook

QB Brett Favre survived and he even performed very well. So well in fact that he’s given Brad Childress another few years worth of salary. I still think it was a mistake to extend Childress’ contract because that team will be back to being so-so once Favre finally retires. Do I think he’ll be back? Yes, I do think Favre will come back for another year. He’s just taking time off to rest up, shoot some new Sears or Hyundai commercials and maybe even some Wrangler ones if his arm feels alright. Plus, he really doesn’t want his last pass of his career to be an INT.

Of course Favre isn’t the only player the Vikes would like to welcome back. DE Ray Edwards had a great year playing opposite Jared Allen and they’ll work on a deal. DT Jimmy Kennedy has been re-signed, leaving the Vikes with a focus on the aging secondary and a LB corps that lacks depth.

On offense, the Vikes need to replace the loss of RB Chester Taylor to free agency. In addition, they’ll need to decide whether they want to bring back QB Tarvaris Jackson. I still like his potential and he played well in pre-season last year.

In the first round, I’m looking for the Vikes to target a DB like Kyle Wilson, Devin McCourty, Patrick Robinson or Taylor Mays. In the second and third round, I expect them to go after a LB and a RB. They’ll work the third day focusing on DBs, O-Linemen and LBs with maybe a shot at a run-blocking TE like Nate Byham or Brody Eldridge.

The Vikes have a good team that almost made it to the Super Bowl. Adrian Peterson needs to work more on ball security and the pass coverage needs to tighten up for them to have another run. With Favre back, expect good numbers to be posted once again by WR Sidney Rice and TE Visanthe Shiancoe, and look for WR Percy Harvin to be used in a number of new ways.
